Professional development system

Iowa's professional development system is coordinated by the state professional development specialist, who works with a team made up of administrators, instructors, and trainers. A data-driven planning process is used to identify professional development needs and set priorites for each year. Emphasis is given in a number of key areas, including literacy, math, and English language instruction; assessment; educational technology; learning disabilities; and distance learning. Professional development is offered through an array of workshops and webinars, along with one-year academies for teachers, such as our Numeracy Academy.

STAR implementation

The overall goal for the Adult Education team in utilizing the STAR project in Iowa is to implement evidence-based reading instruction in Pre-ASE (Adult Secondary Education) and ESL (English as a Second Language) level classes. Participation in this project will enable Iowa based programs to provide additional help to Pre-ASE and ESL level learners to achieve their goals. All students at the Pre-ASE and ESL level (CASAS 211-235) will benefit from the diagnostics and instructional strategies of STAR.

The Adult Education Team will support programs in 2012 to be trained by Nationally certified STAR trainers. A team is chosen based on the support of an administrator, Pre-ASE and ESL teacher. In 2013, Iowa will support individuals to become certified Train the Trainers in preparation to extend the STAR to other Iowa programs. Programs chosen to expand will be based on their openness to programmatic change, managed enrollment, team planning, and implementation strategies of the evidence-based STAR model until it is offered in all 15 programs state-wide.
