Professional Development System

The Center for Adult Learning and Literacy (CALL) is the professional development system for Maine Adult Education and the only statewide center in Maine. CALL is housed at the University of Maine.

Statewide professional development priorities are guided by the state leadership activities in the Workforce Investment Act. The Adult Education Team and CALL staff review evaluation reports from professional development events, feedback from the Staff Development Advisory Council, and federal mandates to set out the yearly priorities.

STAR Pilot

In Maine, two adult education programs and one regional alliance are implementing the STAR pilot, with three program administrators and 17 teachers participating. Each teacher is implementing STAR in one classroom.

A variety of classes are represented, such as computer classes, ESOL, math, writing, and reading. The majority of classes are multi-level.

Most teachers have an education background but not a specialty in reading. Twelve of the 17 teachers have participated in Maine's Reading Essentials for Adult Literacy (REAL) professional development series.

Maine added a Regional Reading Resource Instructors component to the STAR pilot. Four teachers participated in this component to train teachers in other regions of the state in adult evidence-based reading instruction.

Maine continues to implement Project STAR. This year three regional teams and one program team are participating in our Maine STAR Institutes. Ten local programs are involved with fourteen teachers and four administrators.

Maine continues to support the original Maine STAR pilot sites with ongoing professional development and onsite technical assistance. We continue to build Maine STAR trainer capacity with two national trainers and six Maine STAR Teacher Leaders leading the three two-day STAR Institutes.

Maine has included a distance learning training event in this year's professional development plan, connecting our sites separated by eight hours of driving time with one ATM broadcast called Implementing EBRI in the Classroom. This session was lead by one of our Maine STAR Teacher Leaders.
